PYE B31BQ

Portable radio, tubes, dry battery powered

This is what you went to the beach with, besides girlfriend, dog and picnic basket. Dog is not-done anymore.

Measurements: 29 x 20,5 x 11 cm
Weight: 2,6 kg without batteries!
That's why you needed the girlfriend!

The radio still works, when connected to a power supply as batteries are no longer available.

When opening the cover, a distinctive formaldehyde smell is presented. This particular, addictive smell is why people as myself collect old radio's. In order to preserve the smell also, I keep the radio in an airtight plastic bag (!)

Imprinted label on top. Ever seen blue crocodiles? Very rare! That's why these old radio's are so very valuable.
In the lid an aerial was fitted, you can see the cable, coming out of the battery compartment.

In the upper left corner of the radio frame, the on/off switch is located (left, next to the rivet). Closing the lid turns off the radio.

Three knobs:

  • Volume control without on/off switch
  • Band switch
  • Tuning dial with delay

Nice logo.
Nice, these named scales. On top: long wave stations. Because this radio was made for the British home-market, the long and medium wave scales  mainly mention home stations: (BBC-) Light Program, Midlands, Welsh, (BBC-) Third Program, a.s.o.

Interior.
Three tubes are visible, but there are four. These tubes need a 1,5 Volt filament battery and a 90 Volt Anode battery.
The loudspeaker is made by Celestion.
Identification.
